Does Your Electrical Box Need Professional Repairs? Let's Find Out

Posted on: 15 April 2020

It is very important to make sure that you are making sure to occasionally check the condition of the electrical panel box in your home. This can be difficult for some people, especially when the electrical box is down in the basement and it is not in an area that is visited frequently. If this describes your situation, you might want to set reminders on the calendar in your smartphone so you can be reminded to check out the electrical box every month or so. Of course, when checking the panel, you want to know just what it is that would indicate the need for an electrician. Here are some things to keep an eye out for:

There Is Heat Coming Off Of The Electrical Panel

When you get to the electrical panel, there will be a metal door that you will open. When you do this, you might feel some heat radiating off of the metal around the breakers. If you do not immediately feel the heat, you still want to place the back of your hand against the metal between the rows of electrical breakers. If the temperature of the box seems to be hotter than room temperature, you will need to contact an electrical contractor. It might be a good idea to call for emergency electrical services in case the wires are shorting out.

Some Breakers Won't Stay In Position

You should be able to hear and feel a snap when flipping the breakers into the on or off position. If you notice that one or more breakers are not easily snapping into place or that they immediately snap back, you will want to call for help from an electrician. Most likely, this is a simple repair and will only consist of replacing the old, worn-out breakers. However, while the electrician is in your home working on the electrical panel, you might want to see if he or she can inspect the other breakers, the wiring inside of the breaker box, and the main electrical line that comes into your home and into the panel box. This way, if there is anything going wrong, you can be made aware of it and the repairs can be scheduled. Depending on the issue, your electrician might be able to do the additional repairs right on the spot. This will save you from another home-visit fee that is generally charged whenever a contractor comes over.

Do make sure that you are finding a reputable electrician to hire for any work that needs to be done to your electrical panel box. The more experience they have, the easier it will be to deal with any electrical problems you could have.
