3 Reasons Why You Must Have Your Ducts Cleaned This Year
Posted on: 13 May 2019
Do you own or rent your house or apartment? How long has it been since you had your air conditioning ducts cleaned out? A lot of people don't realize that this is something that needs to be done -- if they do realize it, they may not know why it's even necessary. If it's been more than a few years since the last cleaning, if ever, you may be tempted to skip the cleaning again because it's not necessary. While you may still be able to use your air conditioner, there are a number of reasons why it's actually critical that you have your ducts cleaned out every few years. Some of the most important of these reasons include the following:
Leakage
Over time, small vibrations caused by your air conditioner's fan running can cause your ductwork to slowly pull apart. This can result in leakage into your attic or crawlspace so that you're cooling off these areas instead of just your living spaces. Professional duct cleaning can identify these faults before they become a serious issue. Some companies that do this type of cleaning will also do repairs; or, you may need to contact another company in order to have the issue resolved by a professional. Either way, the first step is identification.
Health
When your air conditioner isn't in use, especially over the winter months, dust will settle within your ducts and collect on the walls of the ducts themselves. Although the air conditioner may blow some of this dust out when it turns on again, some of the dust will stay stuck. As the months and years go by, this layer of dust will become thicker and may start to encourage mold growth. Professional duct cleaning every 3-5 years will remove this buildup and prevent mold and/or mildew from taking hold. If you have been diagnosed with indoor allergies, dirty ducts may be part of the reason why your allergies are better or worse at seemingly random times.
Money
With dust blocking the vents, even partially, your air conditioner is going to be less energy efficient. When it's less energy efficient, that means higher cooling bills for you. In addition, a lack of vent cleaning may cause the air conditioner to work so hard that it eventually breaks down. Instead of spending a relatively low amount to get your ducts cleaned, you could wind up needing both your vents cleaned and to replace a non-functional air conditioner. Save money and have your ducts cleaned out as recommended.
